Historic Masonry Neighborhoods Tour

Author/Historian NiNi Harris will showcase the evolution of South St. Louis brick housing from the Civil War era to World War II on this combination bus and walking tour. Primitive pioneer, brick homes, grand Romanesque houses and Art Deco styled apartments and homes will be featured. As part of this tour, Harris will lead participants on walks in the historic Soulard and Benton Park neighborhoods, the Cherokee Lemp historic district, the Holly Hills neighborhood, and St. Louis Hills neighborhood.

 Learning Objectives:

Identify the defining architectural styles and construction characteristics of South St. Louis brick homes built between the Civil War and World War II, including pioneer, Romanesque Revival, Art Deco, and other significant residential styles.  

Explain how immigration, industrial growth, and changing social and economic conditions influenced the development of South St. Louis neighborhoods and their distinctive brick architecture.  

Recognize the unique historical and architectural features of the Soulard, Benton Park, Cherokee-Lemp Historic District, Holly Hills, and St. Louis Hills neighborhoods, and describe how each reflects a different period of the city’s development.  

Evaluate the role of brick as a durable and defining building material in shaping the character, preservation, and long-term sustainability of St. Louis residential architecture.
