Assessing the functional capacity of existing masonry structures is a critical step in renovation, adaptive reuse, or change of occupancy. This seminar will provide engineers and design professionals with practical methods for evaluating existing masonry materials, components, and systems to determine whether structural interventions are necessary. Content for this seminar will follow the approach proposed in the draft TMS 405 – Code Requirements for Existing Masonry Structures, currently in development. Topics will include material property assumptions, in-place testing options, condition assessments, and applicable provisions from codes and standards. Attendees will gain insight into balancing safety, code compliance, cost, and preservation goals when working with existing masonry construction.
